This was answered before to a question about replacing with regular AA or AAA batteries. They replied no must use rechargeable batteries. However, they didn't say it couldn't be individual RECHARGEABLE AA or AAA batteries. But these come with a battery pack that stays in the radio while you dock the radio on its charger. Replacing the packs should really be the question. Someone from manufacturer should've responded to this question. If no one at Best Buy can answer the question I'd recommend you contact Midland. First I'd see if Best Buy sells the rechargeable replacement battery packs. Good luck.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Midland's website offers replacement battery packs. The battery pack for each walkie-talkie consists of three size AA Ni-MH rechargeable batteries. Based on the specification of 3.6V for the battery pack, the three individual AA batteries are connected in series within the pack. Thus if you try using separate AA batteries, you'll need to make sure they are electrically connected in series. The capacity rating of the battery pack from Midland is 1000mAh. I'm sure you could choose replacements that can do better than that. Bear in mind, you want all three batteries to be of the same type/brand such that they all have the same rating. If, for example, each of the three is rated at 2600 mAh, the rating for the three connected in series will also be 2600 mAh.
