No, but the USB provides electricity to the amplifier, and if you don't need that you could try the less expensive versions that do not have the USB/amplifier. By the way, I unplugged my USB to test it and it still worked but I lost a few channels.

The USB cable on the power inserter can be connected to a USB port on the back of your TV or you can use a USB power adapter (sold separately) with a standard wall outlet - like you use to power your smart phone.
