Q: QuestionI am so confused about the purpose of this product. It feels like creating a middleman where there is none needed. Can someone please clearly outline the advantages of owning this product over backing them up directly to, say, Google Photos?

With Monument, all your photos and videos are stored in their original resolution without having to pay monthly fees. Moreover, Monument provides true privacy and security for your photos. When using hard drives, you will need to do all the hard work manually: transferring files, moving them to drive, and organizing them. Moreover, you can not access your content when you're away or your computer is off. Monument is a dedicated, always on device for your photos and videos. Q: QuestionSo if this is diskless then what is it saving to? is there an SSD inside? or do you need to add hard drives to it like a NAS enclosure?

• A:Answer I had the same question. Just love how something so essential is purposely left out. I just referenced the product manual and it says you have to plug in 1 or 2 USB 2.0 hard drives. If that weren't bad enough, it doesn't support USB 3.0, so if you attache a hard drive that's USB 3.0, you will only get USB 2.0 speeds.

Q: QuestionIt appears this is primarily a software or OS dedicated to photos. Does it 'read' EXIF data and have ability to sort by by any of those values? i.e. by date only, camera used, etc?

• A:Answer If the only location you are storing them is locally in your house, even on multiple drives, you risk loss in a fire, etc. Best bet in that case is nearline such as this, with RAID backup to mirror drive, with offsite or cloud storage in the event of a local disaster. There are many fine commercial options for this, or you could set up a second storage site at another location as I do.

Q: QuestionThis sounds kind of expensive for some thing that I could do with just using a harddrive. What are the advantages of having this and attaching hard to it?

Q: QuestionIs Monument a hard drive or a cloud service? What is the allowable capacity usage? Monument would seek 5x as many of these if the description of the product was more detailed and the value explained more clearly!! Missing a big opportunity!!

• A:Answer Yes. Once photos are loaded to Monument, they can be deleted from the originating media. The app will walk you through this process. If you have 2 drives installed, the photos are immediately mirrored to the second drive. You can then connect subsequent drives and/or media devices to upload their files also. Once in Monument, they can only be deleted through the Monument app.
