If you press the volume control button on the right side of the phone, a slider appears on the right-side edge of the screen which you can use to adjust the volume. You can either move that slider all the way to the bottom, or tap the little musical note icon to mute the phone. To reinstate sound, do the same thing - tap the note to enable sound, then adjust volume as you like.
