This is compatible with any GSM or CDMA carrier.

Unlocked means it is not locked to a carrier such as Sprint, ATT, TMobile etc etc. So a person can go from one telecom company and switch to a different one without having to first obtain an unlock code. Also it doesn't come preloaded with software that it would if it came for a specific telecom company (although there are exceptions such as some phones that are bought through Amazon for example may come with ads, etc).

It is GSM. Google explains an "unlocked phone" as one that is not tied into a certain carrier's network: It will work with more than one service provider. Most phones are tied—or locked—to a certain cellular carrier, such as Verizon Wireless, T-Mobile, AT&T, or Sprint.
