• Activate today means you have to get it set up on one of the listed carriers when you buy it. You don't have to set up a new account or new line if that carrier still honors the discount on an upgrade. You also don't have to sign a contract and it isn't locked to that carrier. You could change carriers as soon as you walk out the door. Activate later means you can just buy the phone and walk out. You are free to activate it later or never if you want.

• Activate today means to activate a cell plan, like through sprint, T-Mobile, Verizon, etc. Activate later means you won't have cell service on the phone until you activate a plan later on.
