Yes, you do need to buy filter, the regular basket kind will work just fine and the little coffee scooper to measure you coffee. I love this coffee maker for a medium priced coffee maker. I got it on sale and it was replacing a really expensive one as a temporary drip coffee maker for something I could keep for whenever I have problems with the big dogs which you always do. I'm tired of spending money on them so I"m just enjoying this one for now.
