I have seen designs will all the different shapes connected. There is no reason you cannot use the large and small triangles together. You should download the app; it has a design tool that helps you visual what you can do with the pieces/shapes you have. I think the biggest limiter is the number of pieces because of the electricity required. I think the large triangle limit is 30 per power source, but again the nanoleaf app can help.
