“I have a netgear cm700 with a router. My wireless states “weak security” xfinity it stating that it is not compatible w docsis3.1 and of course they want me to rent theirs for a monthly fee. Is there a way to upgrade?”

The CM700 modem only has a 3.0 DOCSIS channel. You'll have to buy another modem that is 3.1 DOCSIS. If you go to your account on the Xfinity website you'll find a tab for compatible modems appropriate for your speed plan. I've made some recommendations below and hopefully one of them is compatible for your service. I sorted them from least to most expensive for your convenience.
