Yes, this router can be used in place of the one provided by Verizon.

Many of these devices now include a built-in router. Usually, you will not have the ability to disable the router built into the device. However, you CAN put this router, or any router for that matter, inside your network. You will need to connect this router's WAN port to one of the LAN ports on the Verizon Fios router. For ease, I would recommend disabling the WiFi on the Verizon router unless you are in absolute need of it (such as to connect to other equipment that they provide), or are unable to do so. You will also need to change the IP of this Netgear router so that it does not conflict with the Verizon one. For example, the most common default on routers is 192.168.1.x (x is usually a 1 for the router itself, and all other devices are assigned automatically unless you configure this yourself). So for example, set this Netgear router to 192.168.2.1. This will keep the routers completely independent from each other and prevent IP conflicts.
