  • QuestionWill this 'plug and play'? I just hook it up and return my Comcast unit; no hoops to jump through?

    Asked by BlownItem.

    • Answer After you plug it into power, the tv, and cable box, you have to call comcast and tell them the information from the bottom of the unit. I called on Labor Day and got someone who couldn't find it, but the next day I called and had no problem. Save that innformation. You'll need it to set up wirelesss for your devices and printer. You can take the old unit to a comcast "store" or they can email you a label and you take it to a ups store where they box it up and give you a receipt.

  • QuestionIs this the same unit that Comcast provides? It looks exactly the same as the unit I currently have.

    Asked by SterileDrawberry.

    • Answer I would say yes however stopping by your local Xfinity store they won’t give you any information since they want to rent you their version. This is the second router I bought from Best Buy the first one was almost 4 years ago it was the same one xfinity was renting at the time. It was $200.00 so if you do the math the rental would have been $500.00 plus Best Buy has a recycling program where I received a $50.00 credit toward the purchase of the new router. Hint: bring your old one back at the same time you plan on buying the new one they give you the credit voucher that you take to the register with the new one. Also if you are planning on buying the Xfinity WiFi extenders they claim they won’t work with any router but theirs, this is no problem you can buy google extenders at Best Buy. I haven’t yet, the router works fine without them. Finally most people don’t realize that those xfinity hot spots are signals they use from your rented router which you agree to knowingly or not in your rental agreement. They can’t bounce off your owned router another reason to own your router.

  • QuestionIs this the exact same wireless gateway Comcast uses for my triple play plan? The photos look nearly identical.

    Asked by Hoss.

    • Answer Don't know what Comcast uses for $11 a month, but I purchased used this modem/router for the Comcast triple play and it works great. The installer would take no responsibility as he wanted me to rent the Comcast modem router, but it was easily set up, and works great.

  • QuestionI am looking into the NIGHTHAWK HIGH SPEED CABLE MODEM ROUTER + VOICE Model C7100V. I currently have a XFinity provided modem-router. If I bring this product home and plug it in, should it start working without calling xfinity?

    Asked by Mrotmd.

    • Answer I did the activation myself, but it wouldnt accept it. called comcast and they gave my the run around because I wouldnt rent one from them. They said they wouldnt be able to activate it because it 3.0 not 3.1 waited an hr on hold for supervisor and sure enough it got activated. Works great. Comcast is full of crap. I work with electronics for a living. Dont let comcast sway you to return this and rent one monthly!

  • QuestionHello. I recently purchased a NETGEAR Nighthawk AC1900 WiFi (Model No. C7100V) and would like a backup battery for the unit. Do you sell these? If so, please provide the product number for ordering. If you do not sell these, where might I find one?

    Asked by LW.

    • Answer I know COMCAST rents them to users who rent a comparable Netgear unit, but the Comcast guy said they get a flow of returns / replacements. I did research on AMAZON and found complaints ... the battery backup units didn't hold a charge very long, or such. They are pretty small. So I purchased and connected to my CV7100 a larger and more robust APC BACK-UPS Connect model BGE90M 120 V Network backup (with USB charging ports) for a little over $30. It had much better reviews, has more power, is about 1/2 the size of a shoe box, has a built in lightweight surge protector, has three output two prong plugs, allegedly runs 4.5 hours, and has an ON OFF switch so that if the power goes out, you can ration battery power to simply run your VOIP and MODEM/ROUTER functions. The internal sealed lead acid battery is replaceable. Wt est 7 lbs. Much better than the insertable junk that fits inside the Netgear. So far so good.

  • QuestionDoes this modem help your internet speed? Every since Comcast brought me a new modem, my internet speed is terrible! I need help!

    Asked by MsBasscat.

    • Answer I have had Xfinity now for a few weeks now. I have used the Nighthawk modem from the beginning. I have been running right at 1 Gig speed. I would highly recommend making an appointment with "The Geek Squad". They can optimize this modem to perform optimally. I do not work for them I just know they can quickly sort this out for you as they did for me. Hint: Make your appointment in person. The Geek Squad are located in your local Best Buy Store. Hope this helps.

  • QuestionWhy isn't this product listed as a cable modem router with voice on the best buy web site? The listed name makes it seem like it is just a router. Only looking at the description does it tell you its a modem.

    Asked by Anonymous.

    • Answer It's definitely a cable modem... i just purchased one because i've been renting my comcast modem, and they won't let me return it unless I either cancel the phone on my account, or put this modem at my home... it will be here in a few days!

  • QuestionDoes it work with Optimum Cable for internet services

    Asked by Minu.

    • Answer You could use it with Optimum for both their Internet and their phone service but it is overkill for what Optimum offers in terms of bandwidth. The 24x8 channel bonding giving you the capacity for download speeds up to 960Mbps but Optimum isn't providing that yet. The most they do is 300. The modem will allow you to access Internet and Phone services from Optimum but you won't be able to use their integrated bells and whistles like family controls and accessing your router information from your TV. Additionally this product doesn't offer VPN connection so if that is important to you get your cable modem and wifi router as too separate devices. I do like the Nighthawk product line and I would recommend getting your wifi router and cable modem separately. As you can save money getting a smaller modem that has speeds matching what optimum offers.

  • QuestionIs this compatible with TDS internet and phone service? Also what battery does it use in the event the power goes out?

    Asked by Anonymous.

    • Answer The battery only provides phone service if the power goes out. You have to buy the battery from Netgear or other online retailer. Also, contact your ISP they should be able to tell you if it's compatible with them.

  • QuestionThis modem/router with voice over can use a battery to keep phone going in an outage for about 8 hours. So what kind of battery? What does it cost? No matter who I asked that question none gave an answer. I won't buy until I know this.

    Asked by Whirly522.

    • Answer I've read that it isn't available yet and I've read that it is available. I think Netgear said not yet, so I tend to believe that answer. While you are waiting for a dedicated battery, consider buying an APC UPS and plugging the modem into that. The newer series of network UPS devices over pretty long run times. I own several of them. I have my TV and components also plugged into one. So when the power goes out, the TV and Internet (and phone) stay on. http://www.bestbuy.com/site/apc-back-ups-650va-battery-back-up-system-black/4984103.p?skuId=4984103 They also make a 900 and a 425 so you can go larger or smaller as desired. I have some of each for various purposes.

  • QuestionSo if I buy this I won’t have to rent one no more

    Asked by Rhndnsnsks.

    • Answer That's correct. Buy it, set it up (make sure it works for your Xfinity service, phone included), and return the Xfinity Modem/Router, which is junk. Remember to check and update your Netgear modem from time to time as Xfinity will do updates which may hamper your new modem's abilities. This is A. for system improvements, B. so they can get you back to rent theirs. Just keep it updated and it should give you a few great years of fast internet speeds you are actually paying for.

  • QuestionDoes this include the battery for battery back-up operation? If not, what type of battery is needed?

    Asked by sjohn.

    • Answer No it doesn't but Amazon sells them for $38 (Netgear PB022-100NAS Rechargeable Battery for Nighthawk Cable Modem Router) or you can buy any power backup battery and connect all equipment vs one for this modem which would only power the modem and not the rest of your equipment.
