The Plex Media Server helps you manage your videos, photos, and audio files that are stored externally on an attached USB hard drive. Plex also allows you to stream media files to other WiFi or wired connected devices using the Plex app. Instructions for setting up the R9000 as a Plex Media Server can be located beginning on page 110 of the User Manual here: https://www.netgear.com/support/product/r9000.aspx?cid=wmt_netgear_organic#docs Instructions on connecting a NAS or Smart Switch (that supports LACP) can be located starting on page 17.

With a NAS drive all computers on the network can access the drive to add more media to the Plex library when needed.

You will need to define PLEX libraries for movies, photos, home movies, music, etc. Check with the PLEX web site for how the files should be named. When you define a library, you designate one or more locations for the files. It is best if they're on a USB drive connected to the R9000 router. And yes, you can store other files on the connected USB drive. When you connect and activate a USB drive, you have the opportunity to give a network name to the router, and a resource name to each of the drives. They can then be addressed like any network device.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Plex media server can use a connected PC, laptop or a smartphone as a source for the data. It can also pull media from Plex Cloud. The hard drives will have to be connected to the PC or as an external HDD through USB for the laptop. Other files may be stored on this drive. Files can be transferred to the drive by downloading from the internet, moving from one drive to the next, or loading another drive with content and then transferring it to the HDD while both are connected to the desktop or laptop.
