As it is one of Nikon's most compact DSLR's it does not contain its own focus motor. It will require lenses that have a built-in focus motor to obtain autofocus. Nikon denotes these type of lenses with an AF-S designator on the lens. This means the lens contains Nikon's Silent Wave Autofocus motor. So, when you look for compatible lenses for the D5500, make sure you see the AF-S designator if you want to use autofocus with your camera. MOST non-AF-S type lenses will work on the camera, you would just have to focus manually.
