Yes... will work fine, providing 75mm equivalent field of view on your camera, in that it is a "crop" (DX format) camera. That's a near ideal range for portraits, as is the f1.8 aperture. To go a bit wider and to get to the true 50mm view on your D40, pick up a 35mm f1.8 Nikon lens also. Inexpensive at $200, and nice image quality.

Since that lens has a built-in focus motor (the AF-S designations stands for Silent Wave Motor), you will have full autofocus capability with the lens and the D40.
