“Is this lens compatible with the Nikon D40 camera?”

• Yes... will work fine, providing 75mm equivalent field of view on your camera, in that it is a "crop" (DX format) camera. That's a near ideal range for portraits, as is the f1.8 aperture. To go a bit wider and to get to the true 50mm view on your D40, pick up a 35mm f1.8 Nikon lens also. Inexpensive at $200, and nice image quality.

• Yes, this lens will work with any F-mount camera. It has a built-in motor, so it works with pretty much all Nikon cameras. Highly recommended.

• The AF-S NIKKOR 50mm f/1.8G Standard Lens is compatible with the D40. Since that lens has a built-in focus motor (the AF-S designations stands for Silent Wave Motor), you will have full autofocus capability with the lens and the D40. Please see your camera's manual for more information regarding lens compatibility and limitations.
