There are a couple of ways you can blur your backgrounds when taking a portrait with the COOLPIX P900. The camera has a PORTRAIT setting that will accomplish this automatically. Alternatively, you can set the camera to the Aperture Priority Auto setting on the dial on top of the camera. You would adjust the camera to the lower aperture setting available for the zoom position you have the camera set at. Ideally, to blur backgrounds, you need to have a lower aperture setting - for the P900 at the widest angle setting, it is 2.8, which is perfect.
