This Nikon D3400 DSLR camera comes with two zoom AF-P type lenses. The AF-P DX 18-55mm G VR lens and the AF-P DX 70-300mm G ED lens each offer beautiful clarity and sharp precision, even in low-light situations. A great starter prime lens to add to this D3400 two-lens kit would be the AF-S DX NIKKOR 35mm f/1.8G Standard lens. The 35mm provides portraits with softly blurred backgrounds and excellent low-light performance.

In one shot you might take a portrait of a person or object and your next shot might be of a beautiful mountain landscape (depending on the range of the lens). All this being done without having to change lenses. Prime lenses are usually smaller and lightweight by comparison since they cover just one focal length. They also tend to offer wider maximum apertures. Depending on your preferred shooting style you might not require numerous levels of focal length and thus a prime lens or 2 would serve your purposes. On the other hand, if you can find a zoom lens that covers all the focal lengths you prefer that might be to your advantage as well.
