The dock is plugged in to the AC outlet. This “thing” gets plugged to the dock via a USB-C cable (included in the box). So you can charge while playing and have the switch charge as well. To be honest though, I think the included cable is a bit short to play on tv while it’s recharging. It looks like it’s about 3ft long if not shorter. I would plan on using a usb extenders to do that!
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. It must be plugged into a power source to actually charge the Joy Cons. Otherwise it functions just like the device included with the switch.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. So, from what I've read + use: The Nintendo Switch doesn't come Standard/OEM with a Joy-Con Charging Grip. *The Key Advantage of a Nintendo Switch CHARGING GRIP: a USB-plug that attaches the USB-port on your Joy-Con Grip, and the other end of the USB-cable to attach your Nintendo Switch Dock's USB-port. +This allows the Joy-Con Controllers to be used as a 'Wired' Controller for the Nintendo Switch, while charging! (Simply unplug the USB-cable, from the Joy-Con Charging Grip for the Nintendo Switch; and, your battery life will let you know when to plug in again!) +Nintendo includes an OEM Nintendo-brand cable with these Joy-Con Charging Grip! LAST, THESE NINTENDO BRAND JOY-CON CHARGING GRIP ARE TRANSLUCENT IN TRANSPARENT-COLOR! Easy, -Switch 'Run with the Game!' Question: What came with my Nintendo Switch OEM/Box? Answer: The Included Joy-Con Controller Grip is a simple Grip that shows the 'Battery Life' of the Joy-Con(s); only, before you need to attach them to a Charging Source separately, or even your Nintendo Switch (Docked or USB Direct). + Really, these should of been included OEM (included in Out-of-Box experience)!

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. So, the charging deck plugs into an outlet, has a USB plug in for an actual controller, or even something completely unrelated like a phone (given you have the right charger), and holds your joycon controllers. The only upside of the grip is that is usable while gaming, while charging, and turns into a comfy and useful controller. I am not sure if any of the devices comes with a USB A-C though. Cheers!
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. You would need to use a separate charging unit...one for the Switch, and one for the controllers. It's the older USB type, so many of the old Smart Phone charges (non-Apple) will work.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. It come with usb type-A to type-c cable and let you charge your joycon using traditional USB port . The usb type-A port from your dock can be used to connect and charge your joycon
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The charging grip plugs into the USB port on the Charging Deck. Or, you can optionally plug the USB cable into a wall socket or other method of charging.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. It charges mini usb to a plug just like phones
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. This grip does charge the both joy cons while you're playing. I am not sure about the charger deck, I don't have one.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The charging controller comes with a charging cord you connect directly to the controller while playing. The controller that comes with the system I believe motion charges the controller but it isn't the most effective for the left controller.
