When you buy Oculus Rift with Touch you get 2 Sensors. So not mandatory, Just recommended if you are playing games that have 360 Experience. For Front Facing Games or Games where you are sitting in a chair there will not be any benefit. But I was say Since Mid July most of the Big Games released will take advantage of 360 Viewing which would require 3 Sensor for correct experience.

The main reason you would want to purchase one separately (since you get what you require with the units themselves) is if you want a third one to place behind you so you can do games that turn you around.

Buying an extra one allows for 360° tracking to make it easier to move around. From the reading I've done though it sounds like trying to use four sensors causes issues.

Some games and items will use a x-box controller. Now I have a 4 sensor set up for sword play range shooting and fighting it makes the action smoother and not like a broken arm hanging. My draw back is now I have to stand up to play my oculus chess game. The oculus program as I know it run sensor pick up with the head set so I would SAY YES. On the 2 sensors.
