Yes, but not on their own. The bulbs require a Hue Bridge, which connects to your 5ghz router and keeps all the lights on one, separate 'only the lights' group. My guess is it's so other people can't control your lights remotely. I'm doing a terrible job explaining it, but BUY A STARTER PACK FIRST (it will contain the bridge and 3 bulbs to get you started (and then you add a few bulbs at a time because they are hella expensive). But honestly, I'm an idiot when it comes to this stuff and even I managed to get it working with my 5ghz.

Any wifi generally should be good as ling as the router can connect.
