There is the basket which as some kind of coating. But there is also a mesh basket which is made of stainless steel (to hold the food). So technically, you don't need to scrub the bottom basket (except to use a soft cloth and detergent. This should make the bottom tray's coating last longer. The part you need to scrub is the mesh basket but that mesh has no coating, so it should hold up for quite some time.
