You don't have to. So long as you have it plugged into a computer you can open it from the thumb drive, edit the document then save it back to the thumb drive.

Thus, you can update a file containing content that is on your computer's hard drive, and then simply copy that file to your flash drive, thereby replacing the old version of that file on the flash drive. Or you could do the opposite, updating a file containing content that is on your flash drive, and then simply copy that file to your computer's hard drive, thereby replacing the old version of that file on the hard drive. The flash drive is not a zip drive, though you can store zip files there, just as with other files.

Open the content in what ever application created it, update it, save it back to the flash drive. If you want to keep the old content save it with a different file name. If you also want to keep a copy on the computer save it also to the hard drive.
