You would need to have a converter from the iPad connector to usb. Yes this will hold multiple thousands of photos, depending on what quality they are. As far as password, that's not something this does automatically, but you can password protect folders. Now I'm curious what kinds of photos you're looking at. You probably would be better off getting a usb drive that has the connector for iPad already. They make them that have both connectors so you can easily transfer from your computer to your iPad or iPhone.
