Pre-out means the signal is only boosted, not produced. They assumed you'll use your old reciever as an amplifier for another reciever when you buy a new one. So there should also be surround sound inputs on the back of the reciever, these would be the signals being amplified in the Pre-Outs. Basically, buy this sub and use the speaker level inputs on the back of this subwoofer if you don't want to buy a new reciever and don't have any sub outputs on your old reciever.
