Normally the joy-cons can only be charged by attaching them to the Switch while it's docked. You can get around that either with this product or with the joy-con charging grip, which is similar to the grip that comes with the Switch but also charges the controllers.

Alternatively, you can buy a joy-con charger. Best buy sells one (on sale usually) for $19.99; it charges 4 joy-cons at a time. -Jindy Marie

I also heard that even while you are playing in portable mode, that the joy cons draw power from the switch to maintain a charge, but can't guarantee that part.

Another option is buying the joy-con charging grip but it also runs $30.00 and only charges 2 joy-con versus the 4 joy-con this product charges. The charge grip is designed to charge the controllers while you play but the joy-con roughly have a 20 hour battery life which should be plenty for any single gaming session. This product is designed to charge 4 joy-con at once while you either use another controller or are not playing.
