Hi Jaden. If you do not plan to use ice & water you can turn off the ice maker and disconnect the water line. However, if you still want to have ice and water available, we would recommend changing the water filter as directed. The reason is, once the filter has filled with all the collected contaminants, you will notice a reduction in water flow and ice production. If you do not use the ice & water dispenser much, you may find the filter to last longer than the recommended 6 months. Hope you find this information helpful. ~ Anna
