It has a coin-shaaped battery which is accessible by opening the back panel by removing two philip screws and unsnapping the back panel out. This information should be mentioned in the user manual. Unbelievable that the CEO's get paid millions for such horrible job.

Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Hey Paul! Great question - If for some reason the Rachio doesn't reconnect to the Wi-Fi, the controller will continue to run the last schedule it saved until it can reconnect. In addition, the controller does have a battery backup, but it's not used to maintain a schedule; instead, it's used to maintain an internal clock so that when the controller comes back online, it can resume running your schedules correctly, before syncing with the Rachio cloud. Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.I purchased the Rachio 3 from BB and when the power went out the unit would not reboot. I followed all of the guidance on Rachio's customer service site and it still would not reboot. I contacted Rachio and they recommended returning the unit and said it may have been a pre-owned unit. I was very surprised to hear this. I exchanged the unit an recieved a new one from BB and the same thing happened. I contacted Rachio and they sent me a 3rd unit. Installed today. I live in an area prone to thunder storms and power outages. Will see how this unit performs. If it succumbs to the same issues when the power goes out I'm going back to a Hunter unit. The Hunter unit I had prior to this lasted 20 years. So far I'm impressed with the Rachio interface on my iPhone, but not impressed with the hardware.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. That is a good question. I think it has an internal battery. I didn't have a power outage, but I have unplugged it several times as I was moving tools around near the controller. The plug was out about 5 minutes. When I plugged back in, it remembered the Wifi information. Your configuration is stored online, so it can always get the information.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. It does not have a battery backup. I'm not sure on power outages a we have not had one since it was installed. However the setup is all done via your phone and I believe it is stored in the online account you create so nothing really to store other than the wi-fi connection.
