IT does not require a software to be downloaded prior to using it. When you connect it to your PC for the first time it will prompt you to install the Razer Synapse program. The program is for you to fine tune your headset to your liking and sync it with your other Razer products such as a keyboard mouse etc. It still functions with or without the program installed.
