You only need the hub if you want two or more devices to monitor at the same time. For instance, I have the Ring 2 Doorbell on my front door and the Ring floodlight and a Ring camera on my driveway. Without the hub these items will only record when an object passes by their individual sensors. But if you add them to the Ring Hub you will be able to link the all together. If you linked them, then if an object passes by, say the front door, it will not only start recording on the ring doorbell, but it will automatically turn on the driveway floodlight and start recording on the driveway camera. Right now I have all three on my hub but I only linked the ones on my driveway, I have the floodlight on one side of my drive way and the camera on the other side of the driveway. So if something triggers the floodlight sensor the camera will come on as well and visa versa. Hope this helps!
