Roku allows you to stream movies and TV shows. There is some free content, but most of the apps require a membership that you have to pay for, ex. Netflix, Hulu, SlingTV. Streaming is shows (TV and movies) on demand, meaning you can watch them whenever you want, unlike TV where you have to be watching when it airs. The Roku channel has free movies available and there are a few other apps like PBS that you can access free shows on. You do not have to pay for service for the Roku itself, but you must have WiFi to use it.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Like you, I had no idea. I just bought it, I'm 64 and hubby is 67. I wanted to cut the TOO expensive cable. I had the Roku set up in less than 30 minutes and was watching TV. You can get a lot of free movies, tv shows. I did not enter my credit card during setup as I don't want to buy anymore than what I already did. We decided on buying YouTubeTV for $40/month as we get 90% of all the stations we were watching on cable which was over $100/month. It is a little tricky getting into the shows for my husband because he likes punching in a number to get to the station he wants but he is adapting and has found many shows to watch that we didn't know existed!
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Roku is awesome! You can get allot of old shows free. Older movies for free. There are several free networks with the Roku. Then if you want to get Pure flix or Netflix or a number of other subscriptions you just get your subscription online and then it will transfer to your stick. It plugs into the side of your television and that is all you have to do. Setting it up is free, and easy.i am 60 and I love mine.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later. The Roku stick adds smart capabilities to a standard Television. You can add streaming apps.

Rather than recommending a brand the sales folks at Best Buy can tell you the one which gets the most for the lowest price. Around Christmas I picked up a 42 inch for $298 SMART TV so there are deals out there or watch the flyers which Best Buy sends to you for deals.. Then call your internet provider and make sure they set you up with WiFi that's what makes these applications (apps) come alive. Netflix is around $11.00 month for 2 TV sets, I set mine up on the computer and watch it on my SMART TV's - You Tube which still is free - I watch TV clips from Steven Colbert, Seth Myers - 2 late night comedians and most all the talk and news shows, the next morning, or when I have time to watch it . Better than paying for cable and getting 15 minutes of commercials for every hour of watching it. ROKU is good for non Smart TV's for around $50 to $100 per stick - not on sale. They get all the same channels or applications (APPS) which your grand kids call them. Set up might be a little sticky for you, so that's why you should be moving up to SMART LED TV it's so much easier to use and usually your WiFi provider will help you set it up - keep the instructions though you may nee if new products not you bailiwick you will need them for changes later on. .
