Thanks so much for asking! The microwave does not have any type of sensor to determine if there is something inside, so if it is turned on, it will operate regardless if it is empty or not. However, it is very important to note that running any microwave while it is empty can damage the magnetron, and cause it to stop heating. ^Jecca
