We had the same problem! Finally, we figured out that you have to take the vent looking panel off that's at the top when the door is open. The charcoal filter sits on a slant in the center section inside of there. Getting the panel on/off was kind of tricky because you have to work around the open door.

The charcoal filters cannot be cleaned and instead should be replaced about every 6 months.(https://bit.ly/2xQAmby). ^Lo
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.if you run your finger across the front of the top you will feel a screw on each side of the space you put the food in. If you unscrew the 2 screws the plastic front on the top front of cooking space will come off. You then place the charcoal filter in the middle opening and the silver side faces up. It seem to sit at a 45 degree angle.
