Yes...the air is just recirculated into your kitchen if not vented to the outside

Please try again later.Yes, the ME18H704SFS and other Samsung Over The Range Microwaves can be installed to vent externally through the top or back of the unit, or to recirculate filtered air back into the room through the vent hidden at the top front of the Microwave. Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Yes, you can use it without ducting, but it doesn't work anywhere as good as if it were ducted. Basically, there is a blocking plate on the top of the unit that redirects the air sucked up by the fan to a small charcoal -infused mesh filter, and blows it out the top grillwork. The filter is really only good for removing moderate odors, but for food like fried onions, it really doesn't work that well. It will cool down the steam from a boiling pot of liquid, making it less objectionable, but it doesn't remove the heat from the room, so using any over-the-range microwave over without using the ducting capability, and expecting a cool, odorless kitchen is unreasonable.
