• A:Answer The XE500C12 was released in 2014. According to Google Chromebook Info Page, it will expire in 2021. 2021-2014 = 7 years. Each Chromebook is guaranteed a minimum of 5 years of updates after the product's release date, not purchase date. The XE501C13 which is a newer model was released in 2018. Based on my above information, XE501C13 (This Chromebook in question) will have an auto update expiration of 5-7 years which is around 2023/25. Someone verify my answer as it's just my guesstimate.

Q: QuestionAccording to Google's auto update policy, the Samsung Chromebook 3 has an end of auto update date of June 2021. Why is Best Buy selling a 4 year old computer as new? How can I find a chromebook that will be good for the 6 years that Google supports them?

• A:Answer Google ends auto-update support about 6 1/2 years after the first introduction of a model. So, from the moment Samsung first teased this model in the market, the clock started ticking. Probably a few more months until it actually appeared in BestBuy. The other question is "why is Samsung still manufacturing and shipping product that they KNOW will no longer get critical auto-updates after June 2021." There are other products out there that are earlier on the 6.5 year cycle. This model happens to be in the last 18 months of its cycle. Just factor that into your buying decision - if BestBuy dumps these on clearance (mega discount), it may be worth it for use an elementary or even high school student chromebook, with limited sensitive information being used on the device (i.e. cheap and disposable). But if you are using this for home, finance, work ... seek another product elsewhere, IMHO.

• A:Answer Does it have a word processor? Yes and no. One runs Google Docs on it, and that works fine when you are connected. (All the apps on a Chromebook run in the cloud.) I am connected 99% of the time, so no issue. If you are not connected, you will have problems, especially if your files are stored in the cloud which is the default. I am not expert in Google Docs, I expect you could save locally and view them, but it is not obvious to me how to do that. I run Office 365 on it, which also runs in the cloud. It supports local copies better. I store files on a SIMM card. This works great, and I use the same Office 365 subscription that I bought for my Mac. Greg
