Hi Jeremy, Thanks for your interest in the DW80F800UWS! Whether or not you need an air gap depends on your local building codes. The installation guide for the DW80F800UWS includes instructions for installing it with or without an air gap. The purpose of the air gap (or loop) is to prevent dirty water from flowing back into the dishwasher from the drain; it doesn't directly impact performance. - Ms. Samsung
