All depends how long the refrigerator has stayed without groceries. If you left the refrigerator wide open while stocking food in it, it will take between 20 to up to 30 minutes to kick in. If it is a brand new model, it should stay 24 hours on before the first stock, and during that time, the whole refrigerator should be cleaned with a mix of baking soda, white vinegar and dishwater soap in a 2 galon water solution. The compressor runs when the temperature increases above the set temperature. I've been impressed with how quiet this refrigerator is. My 10 year old Kenmore Elite was quite noisy, even when running I do not notice the compressor/circulation system operating.
