Hi DMRSR - I own this gas stove top and it has more of a black teflon coating that appears to be pretty durable. I have used the blue side of a kitchen sponge to get off spill over and the surface does not even show swirl marks. The key though is to get up spills after your meal as you are washing dishes; if anyone does dishes. I know some people clean their cooktops once a month and they look a mess. If you are not lazy and clean regularly I see no problem why the stove top wont stay looking good for years. As far as the heat, mine is black and discoloration will be unlikely. Again - the key is clean it daily after use and you will be fine.
Sorry, there was a problem. Please try again later.Lets clarify here, the burner area is not Stainless Steel finished. It is a harden ceramic finish (normally power coated, fired/ baked on finish). The only stainless finish is on the face plate where the control knobs are located. Note, any stainless finish product can be damaged or lessened if cleaned with harsh cleaning chemicals. I highly suggest you research how to care for the stainless finish properly for a long lasting look( with regards to acceptable cleaning solutions). With regards to the cooking area, you can use over the counter cleaning products, but again when scrubbing with harsh cleaners and/ or various scrubbers, it can diminish the shiny finish and dull/ scratch over time.
