“Can I connect my cable TV to it without a cable box and get any programs from just having the cable plugged in, I do have cable and a box on another tv. I don't want to have to pay for another cable box, or would I better off getting an antenna.”

I’m sorry, I don’t know. I bought my own wireless router so I wasn’t renting one from the cable com for the wireless internet hookup. I am also using the Firestick with it. It’s been a good combination for me so far.
