The machine does have sensors in it to control water level. I've used it to run single items through and it has no problem using a minimum amount of water while still getting things clean. Works great when you need to wash things like pillows or blankets. Even works on stuffed animals.

To help determine how much water your load is going to need, first the washer will use Weight Sensing. After it drains any water that's in with the load, it rotates back and forth for 2-5 minutes and weighs the load. While this is happening, Weight Sensing may display on the panel, or it may display rolling lines. Once the washer knows how much your load weighs, it will fill with the appropriate amount of water. Also, be sure to select the appropriate cycles and settings for the type of load you are washing. ^Jecca
