No machine drains completely. Normally there is a check valve there that is supposed to stop the dirty water from going back to the drum. It could be dirty or something stuck in it so it wont close fully. If you don't want to bother with it, than dump a cup or 2 of bleach in the drum and run a quick drain and spin cycle before doing your laundry. Please DO NOT leave your wet clothes in the machine for longer than a day, that causes the odor as well as does keeping the lid closed. I do laundry 2 days a week. I make the last load whites and I use bleach. That helps alot.
