Because screen size is measured from upper left corner to lower right corner and not straight across. This is how all TV's are measured.

My wife and I have been amused at the use of one number to describe a two-dimensional object. Yes, screens are actually three-dimensional objects, but the thickness is not relevant to the viewing size. Run a tape measure from one corner to its diagonal opposite, and the number should be very close to 75 inches, thus the phrase "75 inch class" or "74.5 inch class".
