Samsung doesn't recommend removing the heatsink, as it could damage the drive. According to Tom's Hardware, the 990 Pro's optional heatsink is unnecessary. The 990 Pro consumes less than 6 watts under full load, which is lower than any other high-end Gen 4 drive. Even without a heatsink, the 990 Pro reaches 72 degrees Celsius, which is high but not dangerous. However, some say that PCIe 4.0 nvme drives generally need a heatsink or they will throttle under load.
