Yes, has a battery with a tag in place so battery is not active. Uses a CR2032 battery. Once paired to your phone there's a "Power Saving Mode" that can be activated to conserve battery, doesn't effect location read of device.

The Samsung SmartTag2 uses a CR2032 coin-shaped lithium battery, commonly found in wristwatches. This battery does not require charging and can last up to a year, depending on usage. To check the battery level: Open the SmartThings app. Tap the menu (three horizontal lines). Select All devices. Choose your SmartTag. The battery level will be displayed at the bottom of the screen.
