“What is the small pin-like metal key for that was included in the box for this tablet?”

It's main use is to eject the tray that holds the SD card if you use one. There is a small hole in the tray that the key is pushed into to release the tray.

To open the side where the SIM card or where the SD card goes to store data

You can use it to open a slot for external storage(SD Card) which located on the left top. (tiny hole)
