• Most tablets can connect to a WiFi for Internet service so having a carrier service plan is not a requirement. You can always use whatever apps are loaded without any Internet at all but if you want to download new apps or surf the web you'll need to either connect to a WiFi or sign up for a carrier service if you want to be able to surf when you're not near any WiFi. Be careful when buying a tablet to make sure it has that capability, if you want it......iPads, for example come in 2 flavors: WiFi only or WiFi with cellular so if you don't buy the cellular capability from the start then you can never use it on that tablet.
