In my experience with two different BD-J5100 players, closed captions, even if encoded on the DVD, cannot be accessed. Samsung claims otherwise, but even following their tech support's instructions closely results in "NOT AVAILABLE" showing onscreen. Modern subtitles, which are turned on and off through the disc's on-screen menu, work well, but not the older CC closed captions. Subtitles can also be accessed by pressing the remote's INFO and SUBTITLE buttons in quick succession, then scrolling up or down to select the desired subtitle language.
