“I am new to photo sticks. I read the q & A section and they all mentioned transferring photos . Does that mean once the photos are transferred they are gone from the phone? I actually only want to copy my photos onto the stick as a backup .”

They’ll stay on your phone unless you choose to delete them after they are backed up. It’ll give you the option to delete after import.
