No it works like plugging the phone into a computer using the lightning connector. U need to download their app though and then u can transfer the photos to the drive once u plug it into the lightning connector at bottom of phone. Depending on ur case u may have to remove that first. It won’t go into my phone with my otter box case on.

I couldn’t copy the pictures because i kept getting error messages after a few seconds. I tried to use it multiple times within a week but eventually gave up and returned the item. I was very disappointed.
