If I understand correctly, this is the transfer speed at which data is copied to the SD card. At 40 mb/s, the card should write data at 40 million bits per second. This should be plenty fast enough for most applications. There are other more expensive cards that have faster write speeds if you need it (i.e. high-end professional photography).
