The cable supplied with this drive is not proprietary, so it can, indeed, be replaced, or upgraded to one of a longer length. The cable in question is most-accurately referred to as a "'USB 3.0 A Male' to 'USB 3.0 Micro-B Male'" Data Cable. If considering a replacement of a longer length, take note that, technically, the USB 3.0 spec does not detail a maximum cable-length, however, a 9.8 foot (3.0 meter) maximum-length is recommended.
