Is this its own lock or does it slide or install over an existing deadbolt? -Niether. You keep the outdoor part of your existing deadbolt, and the internal mechanism, while this replaces the indoor part of the deadbolt. Also what type of batteries does it take? -AA, and they're supposed to last 11 months or something.

And on the front of the door you place the key pad . The back door portion of the lock runs on 4 AA battery And the front portion (the keypad) I cannot recall

Pin pad comes with 2 preinstalled coin cell batteries, and the lock it self has 4 AA batteries that come preinstalled.
